Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Route 440 Extension Project Advances

Final Alternatives Analysis Report now available to review, click here.
Selecting the Locally Preferred Alternative for the western extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail in Jersey City, the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors advanced the project that would help support the city's planned development on the Newark Bay waterfront while easing traffic congestion along the busy Route 440 corridor.
The Locally Preferred Alternative would extend the line from the West Side Avenue Station across Route 440 in Jersey City. This extension would improve mobility for existing and future residents of West Side by providing convenient connections between the existing HBLR West Side Avenue Station and points west of Route 440.
The Locally Preferred Alternative was selected following NJ TRANSIT's completion of an alternatives analysis to explore the feasibility of a western light rail extension across Route 440. The plan is slated to be submitted to the North Jersey Transportation Authority (NJTPA) for designation and inclusion in the agency's Long Range Regional Transportation Plan. The project must be included in the NJTPA's Long Range Plan in order to be eligible for federal funding.
